Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy is the application of the tools of Yoga (movement, breath regulation, relaxation and mindfulness) to help support a variety of physical and mental conditions.

Yoga Therapy is about the individual - so there’s no prescription for a condition, just working with the student and focusing on what you can do (rather than focusing on what you can’t do) and supporting you where you’re at and working from there.

Tools of Yoga include:

  • Movement

  • Breath Regulation

  • Relaxation

  • Mindfulness

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is effective if you have specific health goals or conditions as it addresses all aspects of the person - not just musculoskeletal system, but also mind and nervous system, and other physiology such as sleep, digestion etc.

It aids in the relief of everything from musculoskeletal conditions, sleep and digestive disorders, depression and anxiety, and common chronic illnesses.

The practices themselves can appear very simple but, if done regularly, gently and consistently over a period of time, they can have very noticeable results as they are taking the student against the direction of their problem (re-patterning). For example, heat based conditions (eg. rosacea, anxiety, gut problems, reflux) need cooling and calming practices that soothe the condition.

The History Of  Yoga Therapy

LINEAGE OF THE PRACTICE

T Krishnamacharya (8 November 1888 – 28 February 1989) was perhaps the most influential yogi of the 20th century.

With an exceptional mind, he was a scholar of Vedanta, Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology and more - but his path was Yoga and Yoga Therapy.

After an extraordinary 7 years studying with a Yoga master in a remote cave in the Himalayas, Krishnamacharya raised his family in Chennai where he began to train not only Indians but also Westerners in the traditional tools and teachings of Yoga. He is considered progressive for his inclusion of women in areas of study such as Chanting. He had a deep reverence for tradition but was also able to see how to remain true to the spirit of Yoga and adapt the tools and techniques to the context and the individual.

His own son T K V Desikachar, who was himself to become a well-known and very respected yogi, was trained as an engineer but became curious about what happened in his father’s little yoga studio attached to their home. Why were the students so grateful, so changed? What was this ancient knowledge his father was putting into practice? Desikachar was to become one of Krishnamacharya’s most devoted students, studying daily with him for over 30 years.

This lineage is direct from classical sources. It's about passing on the universality of the classical teachings. There are principles that are timeless because they have been relevant for thousands of years. There's a mystical nature that I tap into through this lineage, something universal that I can participate in and bring to my students so that regardless of background, gender, age, culture, it's like yoga is talking directly to you, directly relevant to your suffering and your circumstances.

What happens in a session

Please arrive at Vitality Junction 5 minutes before your scheduled session. You would have already been sent a health questionnaire to send back to me prior to the session. We will go over the questionnaire answers during the session so it is important this is completed prior as it can take a while.

First sessions determine your range of movement and issues that you are experiencing so we can develop a targeted program and home practice schedule.

Follow up consultations are used to tweak and refine your practice, and if you are experiencing improvement then we give you a progression practice to take it a step further.
